You Know It Makes Cents – Crisis Auction Raises £4,147

Many thanks are due to all who bid for last week's signed David Gilmour proofs in aid of Crisis. The auction (via eBay) generated the sum of £4,174.17 assuming, as Crisis says, that everybody pays. Andrew Page, Crisis Director of Fundraising, said, "I am delighted to announce that Crisis have raised over £4,000 thanks to the recent auction of signed merchandise donated by David Gilmour. Crisis would especially like to thank DavidGilmour.com and their members for supporting our fundraising efforts. This money will make a huge difference, funding our work to help homeless people transform their lives and realise their potential".

As the colder season continues, don't forget the difference that Crisis can make to the lives of ordinary people; should you wish to contribute at any time, their Web site is here.

Any Colour You Like – But Make It Black

Phil Taylor's book The Black Strat is now available to buy, but only from its dedicated Web site.

Written to accompany the proposed Fender David Gilmour Signature Stratocaster (see below) by David's longtime guitar tech, it features the story of the iconic black guitar, bought off the shelf at Manny's music store, New York, in 1970. The book format is large-scale paperback in a high-gloss cover, and its 121 pages feature a photo or photos on almost all of them. In effect a musical history from the time when guitars were an expensive luxury and even a chart rock star only had one main guitar and a spare, the book takes us right up the present and the Signature model Black Strat, which is still in development.

The price is £19.95 plus post & packing, and is currently only available via its Web site – not through Amazon mail order, although they do have it listed. It is possible that some selected UK retailers may stock it in the future, but there is no news of that at present. We will update any and all local retail deals when confirmed.

17 Degrees of Proof – Crisis eBay Auction

David Gilmour has long been a supporter of Crisis, the UK charity for the homeless, most recently via the sale of signed Pink Floyd inflatable eyeballs. David has now very generously donated signed proofs of DVD-related artwork, to be auctioned via eBay on Monday 19th November.

View the Auction Items
A total of 17 lots will go live on eBay at 5.00PM UK time next Monday, ready to receive offers. Each auction will be timed to finish slightly after the last to ensure fans who miss out on one item have a chance to bid on others. In the meantime, you can view the auction items by clicking on the Crisis logo (left).

eBay can be a minefield for those unsure of an item's provenance, but in this case the genuine items are being sold directly by the charity through their eBay identity, crisisuk, so look for that. Most of the items are works in progress by sleeve designer Steve Knee of Blade Design; prints include some alternative designs for the Remember That Night cover and some poster art.

Andrew Page, Director of Fundraising at Crisis said, "We are very grateful to David for the huge support he gives to Crisis. The money raised from the sale of these items will support our work fighting homelessness and our projects which empower people to transform their lives".

Please feel free to donate to Crisis at any time. Their Web site is here.

RTN On Blu-ray: A Site for Your Eyes.

Blu-ray supporters Sony BMG US have created a 'mini-site' to go with the launch of Remember That Night on the hi-def Blu-ray format (see News, 26th October).

Visit RememberThatNight.com
Click on the Blu-ray logo (left) to visit the site, RememberThatNight.com, which provides much technical information about the format and the production of the title itself. For the rest of us, it's another disc format to understand, and it does require a new player.

The upside is the quality of picture resolution, which can be more than four times that of standard definition DVD.

Blu-ray has most penetration so far in the US, supported by film releases, though in the rest of the world discs can be hard to find.

US release day (via Sony BMG) will be Tuesday 20th November, while in Europe (via EMI) it will be Monday 26th, only in: Austria; Belgium; Croatia; Denmark; Germany; Hungary; Iceland; Latvia; the Netherlands; Poland; Russia; Slovenia; Sweden; the UK; and the Ukraine. European countries not listed have no current release plans. UK fans should check HMV and Amazon for disc availability (and see our previous handy guide to disc players).

Outside Europe, Remember That Night on Blu-ray will 'probably' be released in Canada, Korea, South Africa, and Japan, say Sony. Release dates will certainly be later than the US, because the discs have not yet been manufactured, although Japan and possibly some other markets will import a minimal amount from the US. Sony BMG Japan are 'likely' to plan a Japanese-manufactured release in early 2008. Be sure that we will furnish more concrete updates as they become available, plus additional details elsewhere on DavidGilmour.com.

Free For U – To Your Phone

David Gilmour Ringtones: 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'.
Here's a US offer that you might want to take up – a free full-length David Gilmour live track to play on your phone, with an option to purchase a ring tone edit or ringback as well. If you're the kind of person who would like a boost to your journey from 'possibly the four greatest notes in recorded history', you might appreciate Shine On You Crazy Diamond as your mobile phone ringtone, or possibly Wish You Were Here, or Comfortably Numb.

A ringback is a tune that plays on your phone to callers while they wait for you to answer.

Here's how it works: in the week of 12th November, Verizon networks (in the US only, so far) will be announcing an offer of three free full-length tracks from Remember That Night to download to your phone only – Shine On You Crazy Diamond, followed by Wish You Were Here, and then Comfortably Numb featuring Richard Wright. Songs will be available, in turn, for three weeks each; audio versions will be downloadable, while video tracks will be available only as streams, although they can be enjoyed repeatedly.

The relevant ringtone or ringback edit will be offered initially at the same time as each song becomes available, but all ringtones/ringbacks will then stay available. In other words, Shine On... edit is available to buy from Week 1, and stays available to buy indefinitely; Wish You Were Here edit is available indefinitely from Week 4, and Comfortably Numb indefinitely from Week 7.

Should you wish to take up the option, the ringtone edit will cost $2.99, and the ringback $1.99, (or $4.49 for both), to have them delivered to your phone in both audio and video form. (N.B. Phones with 'video ringer' option are in the minority in the US.)

Each full-length song is free for its discrete three-week period, and after the total nine-week period (three songs x three weeks per song), the audio-only version of each will be available for purchase for $1.99 per song. As above, the offer is only for the US at the moment, though it may eventually extend across Europe with other phone companies.

Click on the track to see the image you will also receive at the start of your
video clip: Shine On You Crazy Diamond; Wish You Were Here; and Comfortably Numb.

Please note that a ringtone will stay on your phone for as long as you wish, but a ringback expires after 12 months, being generated from a separate facility.

Naturally, we'll keep you informed as this story develops – especially with regard to the actual release date – so watch this space...
